What are Adaptations?

Adaptation is the process in which an organism adapts to their environment to ensure a better chance of survival in their habitat. Adaptations usually occur because of genetic mutation.

Example: Giraffes have successfully adapted to their environment – the savannah woodlands of Africa. This area is home to many tall trees. The giraffe’s long neck, which has evolved, gives them exclusive access to the topmost leaves. This has improved their chance of survival.

Adaptation Examples

Some examples of adaptations include:
– Bears hibernating in winter.
– Birds migrating.
– Elephants using their large ears to keep themselves cool.
– Lions have sharp teeth to kill their prey.
– Cheetahs have strong legs to run fast.
– Camels use their nostrils to keep sand out.
– Cacti can go a long time without water.
– Giraffes have long necks to get exclusive access to the leaves of the highest trees.
– Penguins have blubber to keep warm.
